The Habits Behind Our Decisions: Noticing the Patterns in Everyday Life

May 01, 2026

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! The old stigma of Mental Health being related to mental illness has been refreshingly replaced with the recognition that all of us can benefit from thoughtful consideration of elements of our lives that help us stay mentally healthy. It’s like a three-legged stool. Mental health, Physical Health, and Financial Health are strongly connected. If one of the legs on your stool is shorter than the others, you will fall off!

Consider This

How much of your day is shaped by choice, and how much simply unfolds out of habit?

From the moment we wake up, many of our actions follow familiar patterns. These routines help simplify daily life, yet they can also operate quietly in the background, influencing decisions in ways we may not always notice. They reduce the need to constantly evaluate every decision and allow us to move through our days with a sense of rhythm. In many cases, these patterns are helpful. They provide structure, consistency, and familiarity.

At the same time, not all patterns are easy to recognize.

Where Patterns Tend to Show Up

Patterns often appear in areas we don’t immediately question. Some examples include how we spend money, how we use our time, how we approach health and wellness, and how we stay connected with others.

Life transitions can make these patterns more visible. For those who are retired or approaching retirement, the shift from a structured schedule to more open time can bring both opportunity and challenges. Without the framework of a workday, routines may evolve in ways that feel natural but are not always intentional.

Patterns exist, whether we actively shape them or not.

Our Habits Are Influenced by Many Factors

Our daily behaviors are often influenced by more than just personal preference. Environment, routine, and social connection can all play a meaningful role in shaping how we move through the day.

For example, the spaces we spend time in, the people we interact with, and the structure of our day can all influence the choices we make, often without much conscious thought. During periods of stress or change, people may also rely more heavily on familiar routines because it is easier to fall back on something familiar than to put forth the effort to work on something new.

When It May Be Worth a Closer Look

There are times when a pattern may begin to take on a different role. An activity that once felt like a simple routine may begin to take up more time or attention than originally intended. It may gradually replace other activities that were once meaningful or fulfilling.

If you find an activity or routine is detracting rather than adding to your life, it may simply be an opportunity to pause and take a closer look at how time and energy are being spent.

A Few Simple Reflection Points

Taking a moment to reflect can offer a helpful perspective. Some questions to consider include:

  • What routines shape most of my day?
  • Are there patterns I tend to follow without thinking about them?
  • Which activities leave me feeling engaged or energized?
  • Are there areas where I would like to spend more or less time?

These types of reflections are not about making immediate changes. They are about building awareness.

A Broader View During Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity to consider how our thoughts, behaviors, and daily experiences are connected. Awareness does not require major adjustments. In many cases, simply noticing patterns can offer a clearer understanding of how we move through our lives.

Continuing the Conversation

We will be continuing this discussion in our upcoming webinar on Wednesday, May 27th, where we will explore how everyday habits and patterns can influence decision-making over time. This conversation will focus on practical ways to better understand routines, environment, and connection, and how they may shape daily experiences.
